The Dallas Opera

This world-class opera company was founded in 1957; and after operating for decades from the Music Hall at Fair Park, it now resides in the Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Dallas Arts District. Opera is an exhilarating showcase of ornate costuming, elaborate scenery, dramatic singing actors, and racy plots about life, death, sex, political intrigue, mistaken identities, star-crossed lovers, and much, much more. Since many opera venues are now specifically catering to the 20-40 year old audience demographic, attending an opera is something that almost everyone should consider doing at least once if so inclined. Stroll through the lobby in formalwear on opening night, attend a pre-concert lecture, listen to some of the most amazing vocal talent in the world, hear timeless masterpieces from classical musicians like Mozart, and party like it's 1799. Performing arts companies, like The Dallas Opera, often hold open casting calls for supernumeraries (think of them as live-action extras). Supers don't sing or speak, but they fill the stage in crowd scenes or take on background roles such as guards, peasants, or servants. For aspiring actors, it's a rare chance to share the stage with some of the world's most celebrated performers, get a behind-the-scenes look at a full-scale production, enjoy a grown-up version of dress-up, and sometimes even earn a modest paycheck.
