5 Epic Off-Road Adventures for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

From slickrock playgrounds of Moab to the legendary Rubicon Trail, opportunities abound to experience the thrilling challenge of off-road driving.

5 Epic Off-Road Adventures for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is more than just a rugged-with-a-purpose SUV; it's a North American off-road icon designed to tackle tough terrain with confidence and capability. With instant name recognition, a bold new look, and a suite of advanced technology, this all-new sixth-generation 4Runner raises the bar in terms of go-anywhere performance and high-end refinement. Built on Toyota's TNGA-F global truck platform, the TRD Pro pairs structural strength and composed on-road manners with purpose-built off-road systems. So where exactly should enthusiasts take this capable, dynamic off-roader? Across the country, of course, to five of the most epic off-road destinations that reward the TRD Pro's particular strengths and vehicle capabilities including performance and articulation where traction matters most, structural toughness where rocks press every panel, safety systems for altitude and narrow roads, technology for navigating dunes, and interior utility for long desert runs.

Moab, Utah

Moab's slickrock and steep ledges are where a 4Runner's power delivery and suspension articulation are most obvious to a driver. The current model TRD Pro comes standard equipped with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain which pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack. This creates a total system output of up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque which results in the most powerful powertrain ever offered on 4Runner. The newly available stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism, used selectively on technical sections, increases articulation at the push of a button so the tires stay in contact with contoured rock. Multi-Terrain Select, which now functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low, lets the driver tailor traction mapping between rock and sand without wrestling the powertrain. In Moab, the result is not brute force so much as elegant momentum; so climbs that would otherwise be a stop-and-go chore become sustained efforts, and descents feel measured because the vehicle's systems are designed to put power exactly where the surface can use it.

Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation. Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner's go anywhere purpose.

Rubicon Trail, California

The Rubicon is the kind of trail that exposes construction and geometry. Granite slabs, boulder gardens, and river crossings do two things: they demand strong structure and they punish small mistakes. This is where the TNGA-F platform matters most. The TRD Pro's high-strength boxed steel ladder frame, combined with multi-link coil rear and double wishbone front suspension, gives the chassis a stable backbone so impacts are absorbed in the structure rather than the cabin. Approach and departure geometry are functional details on the Rubicon; and with up to 32 degrees of approach and 24 degrees of departure, the vehicle avoids many of the scrapes that would stop a lesser rig. When traction is inconsistent, the TRD Pro's electronically activated locking rear differential and Active Traction Control work together to move the vehicle forward through awkward contact patches. On long sections of rock where momentum and attitude are everything, the suspension and frame do the quiet work; they allow a crew to keep going and preserve the mechanicals and the temper.

Ouray and the San Juan Passes, Colorado

High mountain passes are as much about judgment and safety systems as they are about torque. The narrow ledges, sudden weather shifts, and long descents demand attention, and the TRD Pro brings features that help manage those variables. Downhill Assist Control reduces the need for aggressive braking on steep descents by moderating speed so the driver can focus on steering lines. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard and adds additional driver support for long approaches and tight shelf roads. For example, lane tracing assist and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control help keep a steady pace on approach roads, road sign assist offers helpful reminders when conditions change, and proactive driving assist can intervene gently to maintain safe following distances when traffic or weather complicate the route. Hill Start Assist helps at hairpin restarts, and the multi-terrain monitor allows a close look at obstacles where visibility is limited. In the San Juans, the TRD Pro's value is its ability to combine deliberate power delivery with these safety and assistance systems so a driver who is competent but not extreme can navigate alpine terrain without constantly second-guessing the rig.

This all-new 4Runner has incredible versatility and capability that nicely rounds out our truck family story. We've sold over 3 million in the 40 years it has been on sale, and this sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, yet retains the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Michigan

Dune driving looks simple until a vehicle becomes stuck at the crest of a soft dune. Here the combination of measured torque and cockpit tools makes a practical difference. Multi-Terrain Select offers sand modes that bias traction management for loosely compacted surfaces, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor can help the driver see dips and washouts ahead when visibility is brown by airborne sand. Inside, the available 14-inch touchscreen running Toyota Audio Multimedia keeps navigation and trail-route photos accessible without fumbling through menus, while USB-C charging and Qi wireless charging help keep radios and phones alive for group comms and photography. Second-row tumble seats increase cargo flexibility for bringing coolers, recovery gear, and beach equipment. On a rolling sea of sand, that combination of controllable power and a cockpit that keeps essentials in reach turns a day of dune running into a focused, enjoyable outing rather than a logistical headache.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Big Bend is remote and it rewards preparation. Long stretches of desert track and rocky riverbeds are less about short technical moves and more about endurance, cargo management, and self-sufficiency. The TRD Pro's interior practicality matters here: second-row tumble seats maximize cargo floor usage so spare fuel, water, recovery gear, and a camp kit stow neatly and remain accessible. The standard power rear window and the available power liftgate simplify loading and unloading at a dusty roadside camp. For those who want a bit more comfort on long stints, the first-ever Platinum premium grade raises the cabin refinement without trading away capability. Towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds means a lightweight overland trailer or extra fuel cell is a practical option for extended expeditions. On a trip where services are hours away, the combination of cargo versatility, accessible power for gear, and a resilient TNGA-F foundation means the TRD Pro becomes the platform that allows a small team to live comfortably and travel deliberately across big, empty country.

These five destinations illustrate how particular aspects of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro line up with different kinds of off-road experiences. The vehicle's Trail Ready design and TNGA-F architecture provide the durable baseline, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain delivers usable torque when it matters most, the adaptive traction and control systems are tools to manage challenging surfaces, and the interior and technology features support practical, real-world use across long trips. All of this is wrapped in an appearance and engineering approach inspired by desert racing and purposeful utility, which is why the TRD Pro remains an effective, modern answer for drivers who want capability paired with composure in the country's most rewarding off-road places.
