All Q6 e-tron models feature a redesigned, more efficient, and more compact permanently excited synchronous (PSM) rear motor compared to previous Audi BEVs. The new rear motor operates at a final drive ratio of 9.242:1 and weighs just 261 pounds. Losses caused by drag in the drive system have been reduced by approximately 50 percent compared to the first-generation Audi electric drive systems, significantly enhancing performance and efficiency. In addition to its reduced weight, the new motor design requires about 30 percent less installation space than previous Audi electric motors. The motor's weight has been cut by about 20 percent compared to similarly sized previous-generation motors, further contributing to the Q6 e-tron's overall performance. This redesigned motor improves the vehicle's efficiency, thanks to innovations such as a new hairpin design for the stator windings, the inclusion of silicon carbide semiconductors in the pulse width modulation inverter, and a dry-sump electric oil pump in the transmission.

Battery Benefits

All Q6 e-tron models are equipped with a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack consisting of 12 modules with 15 prismatic cells each, arranged in series for a total of 180 cells. This configuration offers a total gross capacity of 100 kWh (94.4 kWh net). A key feature of the Q6 e-tron's battery is its maximum DC fast-charging capacity of 270 kW (260 kW for RWD models), enabled by the 800-volt architecture and the advanced preconditioning and predictive thermal management systems. This allows for faster, more efficient charging across a variety of scenarios. Standard Level 2 AC charging is supported at rates up to 9.6 kW (240V/40A), which is commonly used with home chargers. Additionally, the Q6 e-tron offers bank charging, a unique feature for charging stations that work with 400V technology. This system divides the battery pack into two equal-voltage batteries that charge in parallel at 135 kW, allowing for faster recharging by simultaneously charging both halves of the battery after equalizing their charge levels. This system, combined with the vehicle's standard Plug & Charge function and one year of unlimited DC fast charging via the Electrify America network, streamlines the charging experience.

The new battery design for the Q6 e-tron features fewer components compared to previous Audi systems, with a reduction in the number of battery modules, which provides several key advantages. The modular design allows the battery to be used efficiently in both high-floor (SUV) and flat-floor (sedan) models, requiring less installation space and reducing overall weight. This enables better integration into the vehicle's crash structure and cooling system, as well as a reduction in cables, high-voltage connectors, and bolted fastenings. A cooling plate integrated into the battery housing ensures homogeneous heat transfer, optimizing battery conditioning. This efficient thermal management contributes to both the vehicle's overall range and its performance. One of the key vehicle innovations is the advanced recuperation system, which enables the Q6 e-tron to recover up to 95 percent of all everyday braking energy, with the ability to recuperate braking energy at rates up to 220 kW in order to provide a smoother and more natural driving experience. The battery management controller (BMC), specifically developed for the PPE architecture, is a critical element in optimizing charging efficiency as it controls the fast and battery-saving charging process by continuously monitoring and adjusting the battery's performance. Efficient thermal management also ensures shorter charging times, increased range, and extended service life compared to prior Audi models. Predictive thermal management calculates the need for cooling or heating in advance using data from the navigation system, route planning, departure timer, and the customer's driving patterns, providing the necessary temperature adjustments at the optimal time for maximum efficiency.
