Three Automotive Expressions of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Whether you're a modern forward thinker, an active family organizer, or weekend trail blazer, Atlas has benefits for you.

Assembled in the LEED Platinum-certified production facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is a representation of a new chapter in Volkswagen's notable history of automotive production in the United States. The seven-passenger Atlas is the newest and biggest member of the Volkswagen lineup and offers a spacious cabin, advanced technology, and plenty of cargo room for a variety of utilitarian purposes.

Contending in the rapidly-expanding midsize SUV market with competitive pricing starting at $30,895, the Atlas is available in a wide spectrum of trims levels. A choice of two powerful and efficient engine options include the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit rated at 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque as well as an available 3.6-liter VR6 direct-injection engine delivering 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission to help maximize efficiency.

So whether you're a modern forward thinker, an active family organizer, or weekend trail blazer, the Atlas has a number of benefits for you.

Forward-Thinking

Volkswagen has given the vehicle a slight value alignment by offering confidence-building innovation along with available driver-assistance features including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, light assist for better driving on dark roads, lane assist to prevent vehicle drifting, area view with information about surroundings, park assist for help steering into a space, park distance control with maneuver braking, forward collision warning, and rear traffic alert to help prevent rear collisions.

Exclusive to Atlas SEL and SEL Premium models, the advanced Volkswagen Digital Cockpit system replaces traditional instrument gauges with a high-resolution fully-digital cluster of customizable vehicle information. The Atlas can also store up to four driver profiles; and depending on the trim, that might include driver seat memory, mirror settings, temperature, navigation view, and more. Volkswagen's innovative MIB II touchscreen infotainment system display utilizes a tablet-like capacitive-touch sensor to enable gesture controls like swiping and pinch-zooming. The Atlas not only provides access to non-stop entertainment with available SiriusXM All Access and available 480-watt Fender® premium audio system, but also offers App-Connect with which select apps from your compatible smartphone can be viewed on the touchscreen display.

Perhaps most novel of all however is the available VW Car-Net® Security & Service. If you leave the sunroof open and there is rain in the near forecast, the VW Car-Net mobile app can send you a notification. If you accidentally leave your car unlocked, the app can let you know to lock the doors remotely. And the parking information feature can help locate off-street parking near a particular destination and even send the location to your in-vehicle navigation system if so equipped. In these ways and more, Volkswagen is committed to furthering the development of connected and intelligent vehicles.

Family-Friendly

The Volkswagen Atlas provides excellent passenger and cargo volume as well as flexible seating for a variety of versatile configurations. The interior cabin is classically tailored by the brand with a clean lines and a familiarly-comfortable sense of functionality exemplified by dual-zone climate control which comes standard on Atlas S and tri-zone Climatronic automatic climate control on all other models. The available panoramic sunroof, which runs almost the length of all three rows, also creates an airy feeling of expanded open space.

The three-row seating layout offers 153.7 cu-ft of total passenger volume for up to seven adults; and when the second and third row seats are easily folded down, a maximum 96.8 cubic feet of cavernous space can be utilized for a variety of cargo types like sports gear or outdoor equipment. Standard second-row bench seating offers a 60/40 split as well as a 14-degree backrest recline function, improved entry and exit room on both sides, and room for three child seats. The second-row bench seat can also be replaced with two available Captain's Chairs on SE models and above.

Along with the available key-activated remote power liftgate button and the available hands-free easy-open power liftgate which is activated by a simple kick of the foot, the Atlas is also equipped with 17 cup/bottle holders, an array of available data inputs, storage nets, and cargo containers for passenger convenience. Passive and active safety systems which hold an NHTSA 5-star overall safety rating help occupants by featuring six standard airbags along with electronic safety systems such as an anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, standard rearview camera, and standard automatic post-collision braking which potentially reduces residual kinetic energy and the chance of additional damage to the vehicle.

Adventure-Ready

Designed with the rugged outdoor lifestyle of mountain bikers and trail seekers in mind, the Atlas Basecamp concept vehicle is built from a 2019 Atlas SEL Premium powered by a 276-hp 3.6-liter VR6® engine and an eight-speed transmission paired with Volkswagen 4Motion® all-wheel drive with Drive Mode Selection. The vehicle is outfitted with a combination of matte-finished Platinum Gray and Black Uni paint, orange accents, and a rugged body kit from Air Design as well as a set of fifteen52 Traverse MX custom wheels wrapped in 265/70R17 all-terrain tires.

The Basecamp Concept brings a go-anywhere attitude to the brand that is already synonymous with road-trip culture, said Alex Earle, an avid cyclist and Exterior Design Manager at the Volkswagen Design Center California. Whether you are taking on a series of challenging single-tracks with your favorite mountain bike or enjoying a relaxing evening under the night sky, the versatility of the Basecamp Concept provides ideal mobile solutions for just about any adventure.

The off-road capable seven-passenger SUV also features a custom body kit by Air Design, an H&R® lift kit with coil over springs that raise the ride height by about 1.5 inches, protective interior add-ons, and a roof that sports LED light bars and an expandable drag-reducing rack system that has a low profile for ease in loading bicycles.

So whether you're interested in a brand-new Atlas at the standard entry level, one with upgraded premium offerings, or a customizable model for trail-seeking adventures, Volkswagen has a variety of options for you.
