Review: 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition AWD

Toyota honors its brand icon the Land Cruiser on its 60th anniversary with a special 4WD Heritage Edition.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is Toyota Motor Corporation's longest-running production model that is still being produced and sold around the world. The Land Cruiser can trace its humble beginnings to the 1951 BJ. The BJ was Toyota's attempt to build a small 4WD military vehicle. The BJ was successfully built; and to prove how durable it was, it became the first vehicle to reach the sixth station on the trail to the top of Mt. Fuji which is a little over halfway. Production of the first generation Land Cruiser began in 1951; and because of its longevity, there have been many different body styles produced. There have been convertibles, hardtops, station wagons, and two-door cab chassis. In 2019, it was revealed that sales for the grown up 1951 BJ had reached over 10 million units sold worldwide. Its largest following is in Australia where it is the best-selling body-on-frame four wheel drive vehicle.

2020 Heritage Edition

Six decades, 10 million units sold, and millions of adventurous miles led to February of 2019 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was there that Toyota introduced the new Heritage Edition as a way to honor the long and storied history of the Land Cruiser. There will be only 1200 2020 models built, and they will be built as a five seater. This limited edition Land Cruiser gives the loyal buying base a way to honor the millions of adventurous miles this one iconic vehicle logged throughout its 60 year history. The new premium-luxury 2020 Land Cruiser may not resemble the bare-bones, mountain-climbing vehicles of the past; but think of it as a limited edition factory custom.

Power

No need to build a special engine for the Heritage when the current engine the Land Cruiser has been using for years already shows the no-compromise capability that harkens back to Land Cruisers early beginnings. It's a beefy 5.7-liter DOHC V8 that produces 381-horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Ninety percent of the peak torque is available at a low 2,200 rpm allowing the weekend explorer to pull 8,100 pounds of fun. That would include boats and metal trailers that are full of side by sides and 4 wheelers.

Towing

Don't worry about having to pay extra for a towing package. The trailer towing package that comes standard on the Land Cruiser comes with all the hardware the average driver would need for towing. This includes a special engine oil cooler, wiring harness for both the trailer-brake controller and trailer lights, and a tow hitch mount.

Heritage Edition Exterior

This is where you start to see your special Heritage Edition factory custom badging. The 2020 Heritage Edition package allows someone to choose between two exterior colors that were picked to accent the special Heritage badging perfectly. The two colors are Midnight Black Metallic or a Blizzard Pearl. There will also be included in the Heritage Edition package special Bronze-colored BBS® 18 x 8.0-inch forged aluminum wheels. These bronze wheels provide the perfect backdrop for the classic TOYOTA center cap. To top off the exterior Heritage Edition look is a Yakima Megawarrior roof rack to haul all that extra gear needed for those long mountainous adventures. What is really nice about this Heritage Edition Package for the 2020 Land Cruiser is that you don't have to be a long time fan of the Land Cruiser to appreciate the styling. You can be a first-time buyer who will enjoy the rich history all the style points and badging invoke. Enjoy!
