Completely-Renewed 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Soaks up the Sun

Equipped with a new solar-panel roof system to increase driving range, Sonata is literally catching rays.

Imagine yourself cruising carefree down a tranquil sunlit highway with miles of stunning vistas in view and a coastal breeze in your hair as you leave day-to-day stresses far behind. Forward-focused and indulgently unfettered, you have roughly 686 miles of driving range at your disposal via an EPA-estimated 52 mpg on the Blue trim of Hyundai's brand-new 2020 Sonata Hybrid. Depicting the sensuous sportiness design philosophy which maximizes emotional value in harmony with proportion, structure, styling, and technology, Sonata combines leading-edge functionality with modern aesthetics. From its artfully-executed lighting details to the fastback styling and sports-coupe silhouette, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is no doubt a cool kid standout among contenders in the energy-efficient and socially-conscious crowd. Skillfully slipping through the air with a 0.24 drag coefficient courtesy of a redesigned rear spoiler, aerodynamic alloy wheels, and a unique cross-hole grille with active air flaps that regulate engine cooling, Sonata Hybrid's exclusive styling manages airflow above and below the vehicle ... and looks elegantly effortless while doing it.

Solar Roof System

Making its debut on the Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai's Solar Roof System recharges the battery and increases driving range by a couple of miles after six hours of charging. The solar-panel configuration also prevents unnecessary battery discharge from the infotainment or HVAC systems when the car is turned off. Additionally, optimized placement of the hybrid battery provides significantly-increased trunk capacity over the outgoing model and thereby helps create best-in-class front headroom and legroom. This provides even more comfort for vehicle occupants already experiencing the quite-stylishly sleek and streamlined interior which has been outfitted with sound-absorption materials such as improved carpet along with double-junction soundproof glass used on the windshield and front doors.

Active Shift Control Technology

In addition to its noticeably-quiet cabin, the Sonata Hybrid is equipped with a Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV engine and a 6-speed hybrid automatic transmission which provides 150 horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque. The car's electric motor delivers a power output of 39 kW (51 HP) and maximum torque of 151 lb.-ft. of torque. While the Blue trim level provides the best fuel economy at 52 mpg combined, the core-model SEL and fully-loaded Limited levels also provide noteworthy fuel economy numbers of an estimated 45 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway for an integrated total of 47 mpg combined. Adjustable transmission modes designed to accommodate various driving styles include Smart Eco, Smart Comfort, and Smart Sport for responsive acceleration and cornering. By taking input data from the acceleration pedal, steering angle, vertical slope, and radar distance, the system calculates on a gradient index to offer driving dynamics that range from extra-mild efficient to extra-sporty aggressive.

The 2020 Sonata Hybrid also features the world's first Active Shift Control (ASC) technology which engineers have applied to control the electric motor and align it with the rotational speeds of the engine and transmission. This synchronization action delivers a number of benefits related to smooth shifting transitions including:

  • Reduces gear-shifting times by 30%
  • Reduces friction during shifts
  • Improves acceleration
  • Improves fuel economy
  • Improves durability of transmission

Convenience Technology

Consumers can also enjoy the perks of next-level advanced technology with Hyundai's optional smartphone-based digital key which can be ordered as an Android-compatible supplement to the still-provided traditional keys. Using a dedicated mobile app combined with near field communication and Bluetooth low energy technology, the Sonata can be unlocked, started, and even driven without a physical key. Not only is the phone-contained digital key super convenient for individuals who prefer to streamline data and consolidate life tasks as much as possible on a daily basis, but it can also be securely shared with friends or family members and tailored to separate vehicle functions or designated for a defined amount of time.

At the base level, Sonata Blue offers a variety of appreciated comfort and convenience features like the hands-free smart trunk, heated and ventilated front seats, and a Qi high-speed charging pad along with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® to boot. But it's hard to resist the 12.3-inch LCD gauge cluster with customizable display which comes standard on the Limited version along with an attractive largest-in-class 10.25-inch hi-resolution touchscreen navigation system with customizable split-screen, bird's-eye view, and cloud-based speech recognition.

SmartSense Safety Technologies

Another luxury-level must-have feature (standard on the Limited trim) is the class-exclusive blind-spot view monitor. Whenever the driver initiates a turn signal, the instrument gauge promptly displays a blind-spot camera feed which provides approximately an additional 25 degrees of visibility over the outside mirrors and subsequently sounds an audible alert if another vehicle is detected. Additional standard safety features across all trim levels include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Advanced Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • High Beam Assist
  • and more ...

Standard safety features across all trim levels include lane keeping assist, high beam assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, advanced smart cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and more.

Add to that the eco-friendly design cues, improved aerodynamics, quiet cabin which isolates passengers from unwanted noise, and energy-producing solar-panel roof, and the sky's the limit for this striking sedan expected to be available in late spring 2020.
