The First-Ever Hyundai Kona Hits the Market for 2018

Starting at just under $20K, this ruggedly-handsome subcompact is ideal for the spunky little spendthrift.

Hyundai has officially entered the subcompact SUV market with its first-ever Kona, and it's safe to assume that the brand can expect a promising response from consumers, especially millennials. Rugged and refined all at once, this nicely-done 5-passenger crossover is produced in SE, SEL, Limited, and Ultimate models starting at a surprisingly-low $19,500 MSRP.

Quick and agile, the Kona offers rapid acceleration and nimble responsiveness via its 147-hp 2.0L MPI Atkinson engine or available 1.06L Turbo GDI 4-cylinder. Standard drive mode selections (normal and sport) effectively adjust spritely performance, and the available All Wheel Drive with multi-link rear suspension provides better traction in inclement weather conditions. The Kona achieves 27/33mpg on AWD models via its 13.2 gallon gas tank, and standard 16-inch or available 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels add to Kona's already-nice stance.

Just the right size for any adventure, the Kona comes in a festive selection of classic and vibrant colors including Pulse Red, Surf Blue, and a quite-nice-looking Lime Twist available on Limited and Ultimate models. A trio of two-toned paint schemes with darkened rooflines which emit an even sportier appeal are also available at the SEL trim level.

Heated front seats (standard on SEL, Limited, and Ultimate trims) keep drivers cozy on chilly mornings, while the available power tilt-and-slide sunroof lets in plenty of ambient light and fresh air on sunny afternoons. Standard 60/40 split rear seats are situated with plenty of legroom for back seat passengers and are folded down easily to allow more cargo room when needed (9.2 cubic feet when seats are up, and a sizable 45.8 cubic feet when the seats are folded down).

Technology is a premium focus of the vehicle, so personal phone apps can be integrated through Apple Car Play or Android Auto to utilize the 7-inch touchscreen or voice commands thereby allowing for ease of access to maps, texts, calls, or music libraries safely and seamlessly. Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls with Bluetooth are standard on every Kona, and a wireless phone charging pad (the only one in its class) is also available for convenient phone placement right at the base of the instrument panel just in front of the gear shifter.

A nice selection of safety options feature assistance such as available blind spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keeping assist, and forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection which reacts with automatic braking and an audible warning. The rear view monitor assists with parking maneuvers, and the available heads-up display keeps drivers from having to divert their eyes from the road. Kona is also the only vehicle in its class to offer the optional driver attention warning which sounds an audible tone whenever the vehicle detects driver fatigue.

Hyundai is additionally offering America's Best Warranty of a remarkable 10 years and 100,000 miles of coverage which includes 24/7 roadside assistance and features towing, help with a flat tire or dead battery, and more.

Roomy and fun to drive, the Hyundai Kona is definitely a good bet for active-lifestyle compact car buyers who need a good amount of room for passengers and/or gear.
