Season 3 production of this historical drama series is currently underway, and multiple thousands of extras from 36 countries and all 50 states flocked to The Salvation Army’s Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian, Texas, located on the southern side of the DFW Metroplex, to take part in the filming of an upcoming episode depicting the Biblical account of the Feeding of the 5,000. Filming the massive scene at the new facility comprised of 900 acres with picturesque rolling hills and wide open spaces is among the first of the series’ large-scale productions in the new location which has been selected as a permanent site due to its ideal topography, local weather, and Middle Eastern feel.

We were looking for a place that would be convenient for cast and crew, where we could capture the essence of the Middle Eastern locales where Jesus' ministry took place. When we saw this site and the wide open spaces with rolling hills, we knew it was the place to build our soundstage and set, and to become our home for years to come.

While dressed in first-century styled clothing, participants were treated to an all-day field festival including games, photo opportunities, costume displays and real props from the show, as well as live musical performances by Micah Tyler, Shane & Shane, Big Daddy Weave, The Bonner Family, and more. Throughout the day, extras were intermittently directed to an adjacent open field to capture the epic scene of The Feeding of the 5,000, also known as the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. The story is recorded in all four gospels including Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and is the only one of the miracles of Jesus to appear in all four books. It is written that, as it became late in the day in a remote area that was too far to send the crowd home to eat, Jesus took five loaves of bread along with two small fish and divided them up among his disciples to distribute to the crowd. The food then miraculously multiplied thus becoming enough to feed the more than 5,000 people gathered there.
