The fourth annual SOUP’S ON! Stewpot Alliance Luncheon and Art Sale to be held Tuesday January 24 (11 a.m.- 1:15 p.m.) at the historic Union Station in downtown Dallas features keynote speaker Jeannette Walls along with nine of the city’s finest chefs serving up signature soups. SOUP’S ON! includes an art sale of more than 50 original paintings and handmade jewelry from the artists of the Stewpot Open Art Programs and performance by the Hamilton Park Men’s Choir.
A former MSNBC correspondent, Jeannette Walls wrote her memoir The Glass Castle describing the nomadic family life of her childhood, a story which chronicles many issues familiar to The Stewpot’s clients. The Glass Castle has been a New York Times best-seller for more than three years, has sold 2.5 million copies in the US alone, been translated into 22 languages, and is being made into a movie by Paramount. It was named one of the “Top 10 Books of the Decade” by Amazon, and has won numerous awards including the Christopher Award, the American Library Association’s Alex Award, and the Books for Better Living Award.
Stewpot Alliance member Tonya Meier chairs the 2012 luncheon along with honorary chairs and civic leaders Sally and Tom Dunning.
Chef Brian C. Luscher of the iconic Grape Restaurant acts as Chef Chair of the luncheon along with eight of Dallas’ best chefs who prepare their signature soup for the first course. Participating chefs include Randall Copeland and Nathan Tate, Restaurant Ava; Bruno Davaillon, Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek; Kevin Garvin, Neiman Marcus Restaurants; Keith Hanks, The Capital Grille; Matt McCallister, Campo Modern Country Bistro; Abraham Salum, Komali and Salum; and Janice Provost, Parigi.
The Stewpot offers a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals of Dallas, providing resources for basic survival needs as well as opportunities to start a new life. The Stewpot offers case management services and job training that help people rebuild their lives; provides street outreach regarding drug/alcohol addiction, offering realistic alternatives to addressing chemical dependencies; provides accessible dental and medical care, mental health services, and legal aid to the homeless and at-risk; offers sequential programs for children and youth that help break the cycle of poverty for future generations; and builds alliances with other social service providers and businesses that strengthen the continuum of care and offer opportunities for self-sufficiency.
The Stewpot Alliance is dedicated to support and promote The Stewpot and to serve as a resource for volunteer events and development opportunities.
The reception and art sale begins at 11 a.m. with the luncheon at 12 p.m. Union Station is located at South Houston Street in downtown Dallas, complimentary valet parking provided.
