Faith and fashion helped Sheron C. Patterson survive breast cancer and she’s written a new book to help others. “The Blessings and Bling: How Faith and Fashion helped me survive breast cancer” is more than an account of the breast cancer experience. Dr. Patterson adds the unexpected ingredients of her faith as an ordained United Methodist pastor and her love of fashion as a local fashionista to drive the book in a direction that is both inspiring and stylish. In between the cancer diagnosis and the double mastectomy surgery with reconstruction, Dr. Patterson realized that she needed to feel better about herself. She looked to those things that she loved the most- faith and fashion.
Saks Fifth Avenue, Galleria, launches “The Blessings & Bling” with a book signing Thursday, January 12, 2012, 3:00pm-6:00pm, on the second floor.
“Saks Fifth Avenue cares about the lives of women,” says Vice President and General Manager Karen Olivarri. “We proudly support breast cancer awareness through our various programs and projects. We are delighted to host Dr. Patterson and be the first to introduce her book to the Dallas market.”
The book ushers the readers on an intense and inspiring journey through Dr. Patterson’s trials with loss of body parts and survivor guilt, to her rewarding opportunities to help others. “Instead of running to God to report how big your problems are, run to the problem and tell it how big your God is,” advised Dr. Patterson.
In the book she tells her story of laughing, crying, and praying as she fought the fears and tears of this disease that daily strikes thousands of women ...
“Faith and fashion is an amazing combination. I learned that with strong faith and a chic outfit, I could make it — along with gifted physicians and the advancements of modern medicine and technology,” said Dr. Patterson.“
Philanthropy was also a part of her breast cancer journey. Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer Dr. Patterson turned what could have been a tragedy into a triumph by giving back to those in need in the Dallas area community. The Patterson Pledge, a wellness program, was created in cooperation with Methodist Health Care System to empower women to take control of their health. Some 2,000 women signed on for the program. Soon after her surgery Dr. Patterson rallied area breast cancer survivors to build Habitat for Humanity Houses with her, and in so doing raised thousands of dollars for Dallas hospitals to provide free mammograms to low income women. She named these projects Breast Cancer Builds, and Mammograms for the Masses.
The new book is no different; a portion of the proceeds again will help underwrite the costs of free mammograms for low and no income women.
Early praise for the book comes from Jan Strimple, International Model and Fashion Event Producer. "From the vantage point of a career in fashion, I know first-hand the value bling brings to our lives, our community, and our economy. My top hat is off to Sheron for crafting a brilliant way to show us all how to enjoy life, whatever our status; and at the same time appreciate our bountiful blessings."
