“The
2010 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Gala, themed ‘Of
Life and Love,’ is pleased to present
internationally-acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Kahane,
heralded by The New York Times as ‘an energetic and
eloquent player.’ The 11th of September Gala event is
also the opening weekend of the Texas Instruments
Classical Season and proudly marks AT&T's tenth
consecutive year of support for the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra AT&T Gala, which benefits the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra and its many programs including adult and
youth education and community outreach initiatives.
“Music Director Jaap van Zweden will lead the DSO in
Beethoven's revolutionary Symphony No. 3, Eroica and
Kahane in Beethoven's lyrical Piano Concerto No. 4. The
annual Black-Tie event will include cocktails and hors
d'oeuvres, an exquisitely prepared seated dinner in the
Meyerson's grand lobby and a concert performance
followed by an after-party that promises to be nothing
short of spectacular.
"Eroica (which is Italian for
“heroic”) is considered by many to have instigated the
art of the symphony into a new realm. It is widely
considered Beethoven’s “heroic” phase in which he began
producing vastly scaled works of challenging complexity
and breathtaking vision. Beethoven wrote his third
symphony in honor of Napoleon, who was deposing
dictators throughout Europe in the name of democracy and
human rights. The second movement of Beethoven’s Eroica
Symphony is a deeply moving, highly emotional funeral
march in memory of those who died for the cause of
freedom in those Napoleonic wars. Ultimately, Beethoven
turned against Napoleon when Napoleon declared himself
Emperor, erased the dedication to Napoleon on the title
page of his manuscript of the score, and re-titled the
symphony the Eroica (”Heroic”) Symphony (“in memory of a
great man”). The work was not only an inspiration for
other composers of that time period but also for this
year’s Gala’s theme, “Of Life and Love.” Piano Concerto
No. 4 was first performed in public in 1808 by Beethoven
himself, his last performance as a soloist with
orchestra. With the masterful talent of Maestro van
Zweden and Kahane, the performance promises to be
electrifying.
"Kahane last performed with the DSO
in March of 2009 serving as both conductor and soloist.
... Recognized by audiences around the world for his
mastery of diverse repertoire from Bach to Gershwin,
Kahane has established a reputation as a truly versatile
artist equally sought after as a soloist, conductor, and
chamber musician. A native of Los Angeles, Kahane
studied piano with Howard Weisel and Jakob Gimpel. He
graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
and was a finalist at the 1981 Van Cliburn Competition.
In 1983 he won First Prize at the Rubinstein Competition
and made his Carnegie Hall debut that same year. Kahane
is currently in his fourteenth season as Music Director
of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra." DSO |
