Behind The Scenes at Media Day at the Detroit Auto Show

Luxury cars, press conferences, and futuristic prototypes make NAIAS part Hollywood premiere and part cattle call.

Quick now.

Tell me what's one part Hollywood premiere, one part cattle call and two parts Starbucks?

Stumped?

Media days at an auto show would be the correct answer. This year's North American International Auto Show, held at Cobo Hall in Detroit, fits that description. A steady stream of luxury vehicles passes outside after dropping off their cargo of journalists and broadcasters from around the world. I arrived in an Uber-X.

After reading the press conference schedule and heading out, one quickly learns that you better get to the manufacturer's stand at least 30-minutes early to get a seat. Otherwise standing room runs 15-20 rows deep. So long-time veterans stake their territorial claim early and wait for the event to begin.

Many marques like to incorporate their heritage to introduce their 2019 specials. Take Ford Motor Company and their special edition Bullitt Mustang GT. Fifty years ago, the film's iconic chase scene on the streets of San Francisco indelibly imprinted that Dark Highland Green car on America's conscious. Molly McQueen, granddaughter of the movie's star Steve McQueen, helped reveal this sporty car.

Acura introduced a prototype of its' 2019 RDX model while recalling this is the 30th anniversary of their Honda subsidiary.

One of the coolest displays goes to Kia's New Stinger their new turbocharged 2.0L, 255 h.p., sports sedan starting at around $32,000. The Korean company has an augmented reality display (think of a mini indoor driving range) that scrolls images of the car moving through various roads while people sit in the show car

The biggest bang for the buck has to go to the Alfa-Romeo's 4C Spider (convertible) which has a top speed of 160mph. Standing still it looks fast and appears like a bargain at around $65,000. While it's not a new model, it's not a commonly seen car on the street and definitely a set of wheels that valets will park in the front row.

Journalists, like armies, march on their stomachs. Tire manufacturer, Michelin (sponsor of the Media Center), offered thousands of scribes a choice of tasty lunches and place to sit overlooking the frozen river outside of the Hall. That said - Amazon Prime built a miniature British pub to introduce its latest series, The Grand Mayhem Tour, complete with beer on tap and fish and chips for lunch. Most of the exotic car companies also had non-stop espresso and cappuccino to keep the credentialed media alert throughout the long day.
