“Eat. Drink. Change Lives.”

Cafe Momentum’s monthly pop-up dinners typically sell out in mere seconds ... and it’s no surprise given the quality of the event and its powerful underlying mission.

A passionate group of like-minded individuals including Executive Director Chef Chad Houser (formerly President of the board of directors for Dallas Farmers Market Friends and currently the Vice Chair of the El Centro Exes Association) founded CafMomentum, a Dallas-based restaurant and culinary training facility which offers life-changing opportunities to the community’s most at-risk youth. Working in conjunction with Dallas County Youth Village, a residential juvenile detention facility housing adjudicated youths ages 13-17 who have committed non-violent crimes and have been found by the court to be in need of supervision, the Caf Momentum program teaches young men not only basic employment-related proficiencies such as cooking skills, serving protocols, nutritional education, and sustainable gardening, but also addresses life issues such as personal accountability, professionalism, financial literacy, and much more in a focused effort to significantly reduce recidivism.

In order to dislodge these individuals from an unfortunate cycle of poverty, crime, and punishment, Caf Momentum aims to pair each program graduate with a chef-mentor and provide post-release paid internships with the possibility of eventual permanent employment as a way to foster successful reentry into the community. By cultivating a newfound sense of worth, the organization nourishes “both the physical and spiritual with the belief that doing so will equip these young men to move forward to live out their full potential.”

To become involved in the positive impact of CafMomentum, members of the community may engage by serving as a volunteer, offering a networking opportunity, attending one of the monthly four-course pop-up dinners prepared by some of the hottest culinary talent in Dallas, or simply taking time to hear the story of one of the promising young men.
