Ricky Schroder | Interview by Sherri Tilley | Actor | Silver Spoons, Lonesome Dove, NYPD Blue, and More

Actor Ricky Schroder (best known for his television roles in Silver Spoons, Lonesome Dove, NYPD Blue, and more) made a celebrity appearance at a recent launch party for RIDE TV, the new 24-hour cable television network dedicated to the American horse lifestyle and culture. Schroder was accompanied by his wife (interior designer Andrea Schroder, who graciously provided guests with candles from her elegant 'poetry of fragrance' collection); and he spoke with us about his association with the up-and-coming network.

TFL: What influenced you to become involved with RIDE TV?

RS: My good friends John Paul [DeJoria] and [his wife] Eloise introduced me to [RIDE TV CEO] Michael Fletcher several years ago, and I've watched them work really hard getting to this point of launching RIDE TV. And I've just been so impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit that they possess and the drive they possess to bring this kind of content to everybody. And so, John Paul and Eloise, I have them to thank for introducing me to the folks behind RIDE TV. I'm also a big enthusiast myself of the western lifestyle and cowboys and cowgirls, and so I wanted to come out and see what it was all about in person.

TFL: Do you enjoy riding horses yourself?

RS: I wouldn't claim to say that I am a horse expert by any means; but I've ridden a lot of horses in a lot of movies, one of them being Lonesome Dove which was an iconic western film. And I fell in love with the West actually during the making of Lonesome Dove when I was seventeen and the whole culture and lifestyle and pace of what cowboy life means. I fell in love with it so much, I moved out to Colorado and bought a ranch and lived on a ranch for seven years in Colorado. It was a cow-calf ranch, and I knew nothing about the cattle business. I lost my [money] in that business, but I had a really good time doing it.

TFL: And now?

RS: So now I write, produce and direct films. Actually, my last one was about a wild Mustang that gets captured and potentially sold to a wealthy woman who wants to acquire it for her breeding programs. The movie is called Our Wild Hearts and stars my daughter Cambrie Schroder and myself. It was on Hallmark last year, and Eloise was in that movie. And when we were producing that movie, Our Wild Hearts, is when she told me about RIDE TV. And that's how it all came together.
