People love Samantha Brown. And why wouldn’t they? Ordinary American girl travels the world and reports back her discoveries in that wonderfully perky, assuring, ‘if I can do it, you can do it’ sort of way. At the Travel & Adventure Show in Dallas, this Travel Channel host of the Passport series, Girl Meets Hawaii, Great Weekends, and more took questions from an eager audience (that filled up every chair available before just contently sitting around on the floor) and talked about her life on the road, handling her fame, overcoming fears, packing efficiently, and what ‘souvenirs’ she brings back from her travels (FYI, it’s art, fabrics, and maybe a sculpture or two rather than tchotchkes).
Also appearing this weekend was travel legend Pauline Frommer (who has created a relatively new line of budget guidebooks for adults), Jeff King (4 time Iditarod winner), and Mark DeCarlo (Taste of America host, celebrity chef, and author of A Fork in the Road), as well as speakers from the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Africa Travel Association, and more. Event goers could hear tips on topics such as when to splurge and when to scrimp, finding great golfing destinations, taking safaris, touring Asia, relaxing at beach resorts, and driving to locations with reach.
Plenty of vacation information was available as representatives from resorts, tourism boards, and travel agencies were available to help consumers wade through a variety of vacation options; but the highlights for many were the cultural performances, booth giveaways, and hands-on activities such as rock climbing, ziplining overhead, and diving in the scuba pool (hair dryers provided).
The Travel and Adventure Show is making its way across the country (Los Angeles on January 14-15, 2012; Chicago on January 28-29, 2012; San Francisco on February 18-19, 2012; and Washington D.C. on March 17-18, 2012) with seminars, book signings, meet and greets, and more by celebrities such as:
