The question was delivered with nonchalance …

“Hey, do you want to drive the new Stingray?”

… to which we immediately responded, “Uh, yeah!”

The Chevrolet Ride & Drive Event at this year’s State Fair of Texas offers visitors a selection of five different vehicles to choose from for an exciting, interactive, test-driving experience. After enjoying the nicely air-conditioned processing area and making a quick stop by the Breathalyzer testing table, we were each outfitted with a labeled wristband and ushered out back where the American-beauty dream cars were enticingly on display.

As we hopped separately into our choice of sleek 2015 Corvette Stingrays*, a team of very helpful product specialists pointed out the features of the cars before accompanying us as we hit the road.  Two thumbs up by track officials (vaguely similar to the water park lifeguards that sit atop the slides making sure that participants avoid collisions), and we were good to go.

Initially, we gently meandered down a lane resembling a country road with winding curves and hairpins turns, but soon enough we powered up for the straightaway, leaned through the slight chicane, and swayed back and forth through the car slalom as we valiantly maneuvered our way past the other ‘racecars’ on the track … well, the large flanking flags printed with racecar graphics anyway.

For our second lap, we took a spin in the 2015 Camaro Coupe* (waiting our turn for the sexy, bright-yellow convertible model).  By this time, we’d grasped the ‘lay of the land’ and increased our speed considerably.  Guests should not, however, make plans to romp on the pedal toooo much though. There is a safety speed limit, and you will be reprimanded for exceeding it.  Ahem, we can attest to this from personal experience.

For a more adventurous drive, an adjacent ‘extreme’ track for trucks features a fence slalom, rock crawl, twist ditch, and mountain element which you can navigate in your choice of a 2014 Silverado Crew Cab, new 2015 Silverado HD Crew Cab, 2015 Suburban, or a 2015 Tahoe. And be sure to stop by the promotional table on your way out, because each person who completes a waiver and drives at least one (1) vehicle will receive a free Chevrolet t-shirt.

The Chevrolet Ride and Drive Event at the State Fair of Texas runs September 26 through October 19, 2014 from 9:00 AM – 7:00 daily. The tracks are located in the Chevy Park Plaza, northeast of the Top o’ Texas Tower and the Midway.
